Local resources

There are many local resources centres that are available to support you, your family, and your neighbours. Here are some that our General Manager is aware of. Links are provided in the title as well as a brief description from each organization’s website.

If you know of additional resources we can share, please send us an email.

Ma Mawi wi chi itata centre

The name Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata translates from Ojibway into the phrase “we all work together to help one another”.

The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, Inc. (Ma Mawi) was born in the fall of 1984 by committed community members who sought an Indigenous solution to supporting and rebuilding families. Since that time, Ma Mawi has worked to support families to better care for children by creating meaningful opportunities for community and family involvement. Ma Mawi believes that strengthening families is a worthy investment in the future.

River East Transcona Immigrant Services (RETIS) provides programs and supports to welcome immigrants arriving in the River East Transcona area of Winnipeg. We offer orientations and information to help newcomer become familiar with the local community, as well as Canadian life and culture. Our settlement workers connect newcomers with programs and services, host special events for newcomers to meet their neighbours, and promote public awareness.

The Newcomers Welcome Centre located in John Pritchard School is open for visits with a settlement worker. All office visits are by appointment only at this time. Drop-in visits are currently not available. To make an appointment to meet with a RETIS settlement worker, phone 204.339.1984. You can also email, text, or phone the settlement workers directly for help or questions—their contact information can be found directly below in The Newcomer News.

Because we run our programs out of Polson School, we can use the school's gymnasium and large multipurpose room to offer a variety of wide variety of activities. This also includes a snack program to ensure kids have the energy they need to make the most out of our programs.

The Club has a drop-in program on Fridays from 3:30 pm - 5:15 pm for children in grades 3-6. The program also operates from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm for youth in grades 7-12 who live in the neighbourhood.
